Arsenal on alert following Tielemans’ latest contract update

Arsenal and boss Mikel Arteta could be put on high alert after contract talks between Leicester City and key Belgium international Youri Tielemans appear to have resulted in a stalemate.

This is according to reports from Spanish outlet MARCA, which claim that the two parties have not yet made any progress in reaching an agreement to extend the term with the RSC Anderlecht academy graduate at King Power Stadium, whose contract is due to expire end expires next season.

The Gunners have recently been linked with interest in the 24-year-old midfield star, who has cemented himself as one of England’s top midfielders since his loan from AS Monaco in 2019 before a full deal was finalized the following year.

How Arsenal will react to the update currently remains up in the air, but the north London giants have been open in the market for mid-park reinforcements this month and could continue down that path in the summer too.

Links with a loan move for Juventus’ Arthur Melo are nearing resolution, while the club are also keen to bring the outstanding Bruno Guimarães to the Emirates from Olympique Lyonnais.

Arsenal remain marginal in central midfield after Hale End’s Ainsley Maitland-Niles was loaned to AS Roma for the remainder of the season, and are left with just four first-team options in Granit Xhaka, Thomas Partey, Mohamed Elneny and Sambi Lokonga; two of them are on AFCON missions with Ghana and Egypt this month.

Rodgers ‘ready for the next’ to step in if the Foxes lose the Belgium star

Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers opened up on star man Youri Tielemans’ contract situation, saying should the Belgium midfield ace leave the club amid a contractual standoff the Foxes would prefer to sell than allow him on walking free, what he is ready to move on and ready for the next player to step into the breach.

“You always have to [plan for life without players], that’s the key. You always have to look ahead, that’s important. Youri is at an age and stage in his contract where he needs to make sure he is considering every option.

I would love to be here in Leicester, that’s natural, but I understand it’s a very short career. Once the player is engaged, focused and professional, I’m not worried. With Youri you can see how happy he is to be here, he loves being here and you have to respect that these guys’ careers are short. If we lose one, we have to be prepared for the next to come.”

Should the club fail to land Tielemans for an extension, the need to recruit a replacement would be paramount. Currently, Rodgers could draw on Wilfred Ndidi, Boubakaray Soumaré, Nampalys Mendy, Hamza Choudhury and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall in a midfield quintet lacking both the goals and creativity that Tieleman brings.
