Klopp responds to Salah’s comments about contract negotiations

Given there’s been so much talk throughout the season about how Liverpool would fare without Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane in January, the last thing Jurgen Klopp would have wanted is a 0-0 draw with Arsenal.

The Reds were in control for long spells – thanks in part due to Granit Xhaka’s early red card – but were unable to add a ruthless finish to a number of slick moves.

Klopp will be hopeful the Reds can bounce back on Sunday and they will be big favourites to get the better of newly-promoted Brentford at Anfield.

With Manchester City playing Chelsea early on Saturday, it could be a chance to make up ground in the title race.

Klopp discusses isolation effects

Speaking after the game, Klopp said a number of players are still trying to knock off rust following isolation periods.

The Reds recently had to contend with an outbreak that forced the closure of their training centre, with 40 members of staff and players testing positive for the virus.

With a number of players having to self-isolate, the Liverpool boss said it might be a while before some of his squad reach full speed again.

“It’s strange, even without symptoms, the boys came back and it’s not exactly the same,” he said. “I don’t think there’s any explanation for that at the moment but we have to consider that as well.”

Reds in Salah standoff

It’s been reported that Liverpool are not willing to meet Salah’s contract demands.

The Egyptian’s current terms at Anfield are due to expire at the end of next season and while he’s expressed his intention to stay with the Reds beyond his current deal, as of yet a new deal is yet to be struck.

It’s said the stalemate between the two parties may take some time to resolve and there are fears Salah may leave Liverpool as a result.

The Reds forward is regarded by many as the best player on the planet, notching 16 goals and nine goals in the Premier League from just 20 appearances.

Carragher makes Hodgson claim

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has taken a cheeky swipe at Manchester United, comparing the current Red Devils team to the Reds side managed by Roy Hodgson.

Hodgson’s tenure was forgettable at Anfield, as he only lasted six months before being given his marching orders. By the time of his departure, he had won just seven from 20 Premier League games and the team was in 12th position.

Carragher was part of that Liverpool side and he thinks there are similarities between that group and this version of United.

“What might worry United supporters now is when watching their side over the last few weeks, they remind me of Liverpool under Roy Hodgson,” he said.

“There is nothing about them; no passion, no emotion; every game seems flat; they lack energy and fluidity; the players are visibly not enjoying their football.”
